In his weekly address, U.S. President Barack Obama wishes Team USA the best of luck at the Summer Olympics while also appearing to take shots at Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump without ever saying his name.
(WHITEHOUSE.GOV) – U.S. President Barack Obama in his weekly address praised Team USA as the Summer Olympics get underway in Rio, but he also used the opportunity to take jabs at Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump without ever saying his name.
In talking about the U.S. athletes, Obama said, “In our Olympians, we recognize that no one accomplishes greatness alone. Even solo athletes have a coach beside them and a country behind them. In a season of intense politics, let’s cherish this opportunity to come together around one flag.”
The comment appeared to be a reference to Trump’s speech at the Republican National Convention when he said, “I alone can fix it.”
Obama, a Democrat who endorsed his former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the 2016 White House race, has made clear his dismay over Trump, a New York businessman who has proposed temporarily banning Muslims from entering the United States and building a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico.
